The new movie tells the story of a friendship between two young men from different sides of the world, and how they meet again in war-torn America just before Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. Set against this historical backdrop, it is an exploration of the universal themes of love, honor and redemption. The story is told through the eyes of Danny Walker, a young American who comes of age in the 1950s. Danny's childhood friend, Rafe Hernandez, is captain of the U.S. swim team...and the son of a Mexican father and Irish mother. The friendship between Danny and Rafe evolves as they share their hopes and dreams – and Rafe shares his love – with their two fathers, who meet each day on Pennsylvania Avenue for lunch at Farragut's, a famed and now largely forgotten restaurant that was located near the White House and which served as a neutral zone for political opponents during an especially divisive time in our history. The story of Danny's life comes to a dramatically swift halt when the attack on Pearl Harbor triggers the United States' entrance into World War II. An injured Danny is saved by Rafe, who has joined up with the Marines, and lives to fight another day. But it is Rafe's last day. He dies in battle, not knowing whether his father is alive or dead...or even if he was ever aware that his son had become a soldier in the greatest war in history. Danny buries his friend in Hawaii with full military honors, vowing to live life as Rafe would have wanted him to live it...and then returns home to confront an enemy that resides within himself. Danny's eyes are opened to the realities of prejudice and hatred, and his own naïveté, by none other than the man who had given him his first job at Farragut's – Walter Specktor, who is loosely based on legendary Washington Post reporter Walter Lippmann. Only later does Danny learn of the true events of December 7th...and what led up to it. When he returns to Japan for the first time since Pearl Harbor with his son Neal Walker (Josh Hartnett) in tow, he meets an old woman whose family Rafe had befriended on one of their many visits there. The woman had believed Rafe's family was dead. Now, she has come to Japan to find the man who saved the life of her son. The movie ends with Neal paying tribute to his friend Danny Walker in a song he wrote for Chelsea Jenkins.
